Maxwell
from 1A
of the Ocilla Star from 1946-52.
It was at that time that Ms.
Etheridge said she and her husband,
the late Cooper Etheridge, found
out what a dedicated worker Mr.
Maxwell was.
“He was just a great person, was
very down to earth, and never put
on any airs,” Ms. Etheridge said.
“He was always true to his word.”
Mr. Maxwell became half owner
of the Houston Home Journal on
Sept. 1, 1952 when Mr. Etheridge
sold part interest in the business.
“He was an especially good
printer, and was very knowledgable
and efficient,” said Ms. Etheridge.
“Cooper was always confident that
things would turn out right when
Byron was back there (in the print
shop). We felt very blessed when
Byron came to work with u 5...”
Mr. Maxwell co-owned the
business with Mr. Etheridge until
October of 1969, when the newspa
per was sold to Lewis M. Meeks,
G. Ogden Persons and Bobby
Branch.
“He was always smiling and al
ways friendly,” she continued. “The
community just lost a fine man.
We’ll miss him.”
And for one person, who asked
that their name not be used, the im
age of a man they knew will live
on forever.
“He was a fine southern gentle
man, which is a rare commodity.
His word was his honor. He was a
man of few words, but an excellent
neighbor.
“He loved his wife, his church,
and his country. He also loved
Houston County. He accepted ev
eryone around him when they were
just themselves...
“He and his wife never had chil
dren, but they always loved other
people’s... They were true givers,
not takers...”
