Many former Perryans were in Perry over the weekend for the 1959
Perry High School Class Reunion. Pat and Connie Boterweg, Charlie
Etheridge, “Boot” Hunt, Billy Powell and Virgil Peavy were among those
with whom this reporter chatted. Fifty-seven of them and their spouses
enjoyed a dinner at the Fairview Room at the Georgia Fairgrounds and
Agricenter on Saturday evening. Earlier in the day they had gathered at the
Perry Welcome Center to view a video on Perry that was shown by Bobby
Tuggle, and they reviewed the painting by Pete Henderson of ‘“Fessor’s
Boys”. A reception was held Friday night at Holiday Inn. Many of them
attended services at the various churches in Perry on Sunday.

Dawkins Wins Peyton Anderson Scholarship
BY PAULINE LEWIS
Staff Wrltar
Cynthia Dawkins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Giilis (Skip) Dawkins of
Perry, has been awarded the Peyton Anderson Scholarship to Wesleyan
College in Macon, Ga. The scholarship is a full four-year, all -expenses
paid, $78,000.00 academic scholarship in the field of education.
Cynthia was a very active member of the 1994 graduating class of Perry
High School and received numerous awards, honors and scholarships.
Some of her honors include being a member of the All-American
Cheerleader team which went to England; she was a player in the World
Tournament of Softball; was a winner in a beauty contest; was captain of
the Perry High School cheerleaders last year...and, she is also an avid
golfer.
A few days ago, Cynthia (Cindy) received notice that she had been
accepted as a student at Wesleyan. She called the college and found that
the Admissions Director wanted to come to Perry and talk with her.
After their talk, Cindy was given an application form to fill out for the
scholarship. The Admissions Director paid another visit within a few days.
Cindy talked with the Dean of Admissions and the President of die
College. Her application was presented to the board of Regents and she
was-questioned at length by the Dean of Admissions, on history and
current world topics and events.
She then received a letter welcoming her to Wesleyan and notifying her
that she had been awarded the Peyton Anderson Scholarship.
Cindy’s father accompanied her to Wesleyan and was impressed with the
fact that Cindy was given a computer which she can plug into her teacher’s
computer and check on the material covered in class.
Cindy’s mom recalled that Wesleyan is the first college to confer
degrees upon women and has much to offer the students. The ratio is about
10 girls to one teacher. The students come from many countries as does
Cindy’s roommate - a double-promotion scholar from an island.
Cindy said that she is very excited about this distinctive honor which
has come her way. She plans to work toward a career in teaching in the
medical field. In accepting the scholarship, she agreed to teach in Middle
Georgia schools for five years.

opinion that mutual respect
between the coach and his players
was an important factor in Staples’
teams’ winning ways.
