Officer draws praise for arresting escapee
By JIMMY SIMPSON
Staff Writer
A detective from the Perry
Police Department is earning praise
this week after nibbing an escaped
Bleckley County inmate Aug. 23.
Det. Bill Phelps was near Perry
Middle School at approximately
3:30 p.m. when he noticed a man
and car fitting the description given
by Bleckley County law officials.
The escapee, 44-year-old Willie
J. Nixon, was believed to be armed
and dangerous after overpowering a
jailer and then stealing his keys,
wallet and car en route to freedom
on Aug. 21.
Authorities believed the escapee
was on his way to Perry due to this
location being his last known
address.
"I had been working on another
case when I heard that (Nixon) may
have been in the area in a grey car,"

"So I followed him for a while
and he kept trying to elude me,"
said Phelps. "When he did a U-turn
in the middle of Kings Circle, then
I knew it was probably him."
Phelps then radioed for another
unit to set up a roadblock. Nixon
was then cuffed by Phelps and taken
to local headquarters to await a
transfer.
Nixon was earlier awaiting
transfer to the state prison system
from Bleckley County to serve a
10-year sentence for burglary when
he fled, according to authorities.
The arrest was the second
involving escaped inmates for
Phelps. He earlier apprehended an
escapee who made his way to
freedom from the Houston County
jail just one year ago.
"It was just a matter of being in
the right place at the right time," he
said.
