Mustangs win two
In a hard fought defensive battle,
the Perry Mustangs defeated the
Outlaws in Recreation football by a
score of 14-0 Oct. 25.
Armar Gordon scored both
touchdowns for the Mustangs, the
first coming in the opening stanza
of play, and the second in the final
quarter to seal the game. Ronnie
Collier added the two point conver
sion after the second Gordon score.
The other Perry Rec ieam was
not so fortunate as the Invaders
came in and rode the Stallions 54-
14. King got the first two scores
for the Invaders as they jumped off
to a 16-0 lead.
The Invaders would score three

make a dramatic career decision the
following year that placed Cornett
in position to get the head job.
Drummonds recommended Cornett
to Principal Carl Peaster, who in
turn presented it to the board of ed
ucation. It was a good move.
Cornett, a deeply religious man,
is quick to tell you he could not
have accomplished the success he
has enjoyed without help. His first
move was to ask his lord for good
coaches and good players. Both
prayers have been answered. Cornell
and Drummonds, by the way, had
coached together at Madison
County in 1981 before their careers
took them into separate directions.
But they kept in touch, and when
the opportunity came for Drum
monds to reunite with his old frield,
he did so.
After a stint in the Marine
Corps, Cornett has coached at
Madison County, Pepperrel, Wayne
County, Burke County and now
Panthers, from 6A
Monique Kendrick was the sec
ond Perry runner, finishing with a
time of 24:20, good enough for
17th.
The four other Panther runners
finished in a pack, with Hmily Noel
taking 24th, Yatosha Davis 26th,
Hilary Smith 27th, Marrielle Fil
Hornets, from 6A
teams (hat had the same talent 'eve 1
we had," he said. "But. I read the
newspapers."
And, because of what he knew,
he predicted that the Hornets would
have a tough time against teams
like Stratford and Windsor, two of
the top teams in G.I.S.A.
After the tournament, the Hor
nets got beat badly by both Macon
schools. By the time that Westfield
won another game, they had seen
their record dip to 4-9.
"Didn't I tell everyone that we
would be better when the season
was over with?" asked Sellers. And,
they were, going .500 over their
next 13 games to finish 10-16, in
cluding wins over Windsor and un
defeated Deerfield.
On Oct. 25, the Hornets held
their softball banquet, g-'ving
awards to 11 athletes with Claire
Hart getting the most improved

con County Elementary. The Cor
nett's have three very active young
sters of their own to keep them
busy, too, nine-year old Caleb and
his sisters, seven-year Kristen and
six-year old Katy. Cornett is also a
deacon at First Baptist Church in
Montezuma.
With playoffs a weekend away,
Comet hopes to better his playoff
record of 7-4. His only losses have
come to a Ronnie Jones-coached
Calhoun County in the region
playoffs in 1991, to Lincoln
County in 1990, a year in which
Lincoln won the state champi
onship. He lost to Bowdon in the
1992 state championship game, and
last year was beaten by Johnson
County, who went on to reach the
championship game. His only regu
lar season loss was to Hawkinsville
in 1991.
