SEEDS NEEDS is the theme for Mrs. Jean Morrison's third grade class at
Morningside school for the month of March. Students have been busy
collecting, sorting, planting, and observing seeds and bulbs. Each student
planted a tree in the school nursery and took one tree home to plant.

B&M makes pole fishing easier, fun
As the weather gets warmer, I'm
seeing more and more folks out
fishing on the creeks between the
T-J office and my home in Bonaire.
It's obvious they aren't fishing
for bass. The anglers belong to the
the majority of fishermen, those
who fish from the bank.
Bass fishing gets jhe most
publicity, especially on cable
television. That's the big bucks
segment of the industry. The tackle,
lures, accessories and boats and
motors all bring more cash into the
bank accounts of the manufacturers
than any other group.
After all, the poles, line, hooks
and sinkers don't cost as much and
the worms, crickets and minnows
most bank fishermen use aren't as
expensive as crankbaits.
Crappie, bream and catfish are
the most often sought-after species
of the bank fishing crowd and
there's at least one company that
has been built on targeting those
anglers.
B&M' Co., out of West Point,
Miss., produces lightweight
graphite and fiberglass poles for
crappie, bream and catfish. Most of
the models are longer than the usual
poles you find at your local tackle
shop they range in length from
8 to 14 feet and many are
designed for fishing with lengths of
line attached to the pole rather than
on a reel.
This year, however, B&M has
introduced a new line of rods that
are designed to handle reels, with
the added length mentioned above.
And three of the four models are 96
percent graphite making them extra
light so the fisherman won't wear
out his arm while using them.
The Buck's Graphite Jig Pole is
a two-piece rod in 8-, 10-, 11- and
12-foot lengths. It has a fixed reel
seat for fishermen who want to use
a spincast reel or one of the reels
designed especially for B&M.
The Buck's Ultra-Lite Pole has a
new reinforced tip section and the
pole bends to a perfect arc for no
load strength when you get a big
"slab" or bluegill on the hook. It's
available in 10-, 11- and 12-foot
models. All are two-piece poles.
The Buck's Pro Classic pole
weighs only 3.07 ounces and has a
fixed reel seat. There are three 8-
foot models, medium action, stiff
and super-stiff. It also comes in 10,
11- and 12-foot models.
B&M also has a 100 percent
fiberglass pole with a 14-inch foam
handle and a fixed reel seat. The
West Point Crappie Pole is a two
piecer and comes in 8-, 10-, 11- and
12- lengths.
Also new from B&M is the
Black Widow, a 100 percent
fiberglass telescoping pole available

in 10-, 13-, 16.5- and 20-foot
lengths with an improved
linekeeper on the butt section.
Long known for the West Point
Crappie Reel (which fits nicely on
any of the B&M poles with a reel
seat), the company introduced a new
Buck's Mini-Reel this year. It is a
precision made, miniature casting
reel that weighs only 3 ounces and
measures 1 1/4 inches by 3 1/2
inches with a 3.6-to-l gear ratio.
B&M also makes a graphite
crappie spinning rod and a graphite
spincast rod for those who prefer
conventional reels.
If you can't find them at the
tackle shop, contact the company at
P.O. Box 231, West Point, Miss.

Speaking of crappie fishing,
Sam Heaton, one of the best-known
crappie anglers in the South, is a
member of the B&M pro staff and
he has shared some of his crappie
fishing tricks of the trade with me
so I can pass them on to you.
"Before crappie begin to spawn,
look for the slabs to be suspended
in open water rather than around
brush piles and tree tops," Heaton
says. If you are fishing from a boat,
use your depth finder to locate the
schools.

"Major creek channels are good
places to start. Crappie are likely to
be suspended over deeper water,"
Heaton says. "Once the crappie are
located, set out several poles with
different sizes and colors of jigs
until you find what they're hitting."
Once the crappie have begun to
spawn, Heaton says to look for
them around visible cover such as
stumps, blow-downs, piers, stake
beds and grass.
Once you start catching darker
black males, you can be sure you
are at the end of the spawn period.
Heaton says to go back to fishing
the holding areas in deeper water
where the crappie were located
before they went on bed.
Once the summer heat sets in,
look for crappie around or under
docks and piers where brush piles
have been established.

For those who enjoy deep sea
fishing, look toward Panama City-
Beach in the Florida Panhandle.
We'll be getting regular reports
from an old friend. Margaret
Dowhen, who runs the Panama
City Beach News Bureau, on what's
being caught on the charter boats
there.
Spanish mackerel are just
beginning their spring run. Capt.
Lenny Knorr of the Florida Queen
brought in a party with 21 last
weekend.
Capt. Ray Brown of the Gemeni
Queen had a great day taking both
red and black snapper last Monday.
Grouper and amberjacks are also
being caught regularly.
