AIDS prevention workshop

The AIDS epidemic strikes fear
into the hearts of most Americans,
hut rumors and misinformation
about the disease and how it is
spread leads to more cases, experts
say.
Information and education are
two ways to help combat the spread
of AIDS and the Peachbelt Medical
Society Auxiliary targets a vulnera
ble age group each year when it
hosts eighth graders from all over
middle Georgia at the Agricenter at
the Teen Health Forum.
The fourth annual forum was
held March 30 and students from
Perry Middle School were among
the hundreds in attendance.
A major drawing card was a rock
concert in the afternoon, but parents
and other adults will be pleasantly
surprised that many of the teen
agers came home with more than
the words to a n,ew song in their
memories.
Dr. Harold Katner, chief of
infectious medicine at Mercer
University School of Medicine in
Macon, addressed the teens on
AIDS. His lecture was graphically
illustrated, which caused some of
the students to be apprehensive.
“AIDS can happen in small
towns, not just big cities,” said Nick
Sutton from Perry Middle School.
"You don’t have to have AIDS to be
affected by it, either.”
Allen Davis said Katner’s talk
was “more informative than enter
taining. AIDS is not something to
be taken lightly.”
Mary Reese said the statistics

about how many have died made
her stop and think. “And it’s getting
worse all the time,” she said.
Jimmel Brown was also
impressed by the number of cases.
“I was surprised by how fast AIDS
is growing among young people,”
he said.
Amanda Clay was shaken by the
visual aids Katner used. “AIDS can
happen to everybody, including
your friends,” she said. “He told us
how to prevent AIDS. The pictures
showed us how bodies look inside.
It was really nasty.”
Debbie Dunn said Katner made a
lot of sense, “but the pictures made
me sick. I learned a lot about the
side effects and how AIDS wrecks
your life.”
Ben Shelnutt said, “His talk

Shamika Miller said Katner’s
talk told her “nobody is immune
from getting AIDS. The best way to
not get it is to abstain from sex and
drugs, especially at our young age.”
Reese said she had heard Katner
was disappointed in how the overall
group reacted to his appearance and
supposedly said he didn’t know if
he would come back next year.
“I hope he does,” Reese said. “I
really think his talk is important to
everyone, especially teen-agers.”
Richard Gallaspie, representing
Arrive Alive in Decatur, told the
group about making safety a priori

All the Perry Middle School stu
dents agreed that the main thrust of
his talk was that teen-agers should
not yield to peer pressure and let
someone talk them into doing some
thing they wouldn’t normally do.
Shelnutt summed Gallaspie’s
talk when he said, “It made a lot of
sense. It’s easy to be intimidated
and make the wrong decision and
screw up your life.”

Police check

equipment

A Main Street business in Perry
was burglarized April 3.
According to Perry Detective
Captain Mike Pheil, someone
broke a glass front door to gain
entry into Tommy Tunes.
He said $4,300 worth of new
stereo equipment was taken during
the incident.
Detective Leyon Roberts added
that 10 to 15 pieces of equipment
were missing.
Police are still investigating a
March 21 burglary which occurred
at Conner Home Decorating Center
at 1812 Macon Road.
Perpetrator(s) apparently
entered a rear storage building and
made off with an unspecified
amount of cash from the safe.
Roberts said they are seeking
connections between this incident
and other similar ones around the
state.
Houston County investigators
were called to a residence in
Hayneville March 31.
According to reports, a cable
repairman was leaving a residence
when he noticed five firearms on
the ground in a garden area in front
of the home.
Authorities were notified and
several items were subsequently
found to be missing from the resi
dence.
Also under investigation is a
recent burglary at a Langston Road
address during which several dif
ferent weapons were reported
taken.
The Perry Fire Department
answered a call to 1504 Lucille
Ave. about 8:45 p.m. on March 31.
A spokesman for the department
said the fire is believed to have
started in the kitchen area. The
home suffered heavy heat and
smoke damage.
