Holloway sees growth as major challenge
New superintendent of schools finds county %num and welcoming”

Houston County’s new super
intendent of schools is on the job
and getting ready to meet the
challenges of a growing school
system in a growing county.
Supt. Charles Holloway,
newly arrived with his family
from Grand Prairie, Texas, has
found a home in the Lake Lillian
area, and says that he has found
the Perry and Houston County
"very warm and welcoming.”
“You know when people are
sincere." he says, "and there’s a
lot of sincerity.”
At the same lime, he's get
ting ready to meet some very spe
cific challenges in his new job.
The main challenge, he says,
pointing out that the system is
expecting 600-700 new students
this fall, is “the growth of the
county, and financing that
growth.”
“In Texas, we fund as we go,”
he notes. “In Georgia, if you're
growing, you don’t get the money
for that growth until the next
year.”
He added that he considered
the coming year’s school budget
“really tight" with “no contin
gency.”
“There's only about $900,000
in the contingency 6 fund,” he
says, “we need more than that.
With the way growth is coming in
Houston County, a situation could
arise in which we might not have
time for a bond issue.”
That doesn't necessarily mean
raising taxes, he says.
“We just need to cut the pie a
