Learning about and sharing in
the rich history of Native
American culture will be taking
place at the Georgia National
Fairgrounds and Agricenter this
weekend.
The Southeastern Indian
Nation Foundation Inc., is bring
ing the Native Way Indian
Festival and Pow Wow to Perry.
The three-day event, begin
ning July 24, will be held at the
Reaves Arena, and will feature
popular personalities and Native
American dancing, said Jerry
Laney, promoter.
“We are getting a good
response,” said Laney. “We are
expecting about 10,000 people to
attend.”
During the event, more than
$7,000 in prizes will be given
away in drum and dance contests.
“We welcome the public to
attend,” said Laney. “This is fam
ily-oriented and there will be a
lot of activities for children to
participate in.”
Laney said Native Americans
are eager to share their culture
with others. “We want people to
come and ask questions about
anything they would like to know
about Native Americans. Also we
will have over 30 Native
American vendors.” *
The Foundation is a non-prof
it organization that raises money
through events, such as this, to
help purchase land bases in the
southwestern United States, said
Laney.
The group also visits schools
and is looking toward helping
with scholarship funding, he
added.
Perry is a great place to hold
the event, said Laney.
“We received a proclamation
from the City of Perry welcom
ing us,” said Laney. “This means
a lot for the City of Perry to
honor us so.”
“I take great pride when peo
ple honor each other for their
accomplishments,” he added.
Perry Mayor Jim Worrall said
he hopes local people will visit
the event during the weekend.
“I encourage people in the
community to come participate,”
said Worrall. “We will see a lot of
our heritage in display, dance and
song."
The event begins at 10:00 a.m.
July 24. Admission is $4 for ages
five to 12, $6 ages 13-61 and $4
age 62 and older.
