Witnesses who testified during

The 911 improvements were
discussed at the Dec. 1 County
Commission meeting, but will not
be voted on until the second meet
ing this month. According to
Commission Chairman J. Sherrill
Stafford, the project has strong
backing from the Sheriff’s Office
and the county fire department
and has already been approved by
called two witnesses, Darrie
Rumph, and his fiancee. Martha
Thomas.
Rumph expressed to the court
his desire to sec Worth sentenced
to the maximum amount of prison
time allowed by law for aggravat
ed battery.
Rumph also expressed to the
Judge how much his life has dras
tically changed as a result of the
shooting as he will now be
restricted to a wheelchair for the
rest of his life.
Rumph staled that Worthy
should also have to suffer restric
tions on her life and take responsi
bility for her actions for shooting
him and causing him to be para
lyzed and confined to a wheel
chair.
Thomas told the court about
the day-to-day duties she has with
regards to taking care of Rumph
and how the shooting has affected
his relationship with his children.
The defense presented 13 wit
nesses during the sentencing hear
ing. All of the defense witnesses
requested that the Court have
mercy on Worthy and allow her to
serve a probated sentence on the
aggravated battery charge so she
would not have to be away from
her children
The defendant also requested
mercy from the Court and asked
for a probated sentence.
After hearing from all of the
witnesses, McConnell sentenced
the Defendant to 20 years to
serve, 15 years of that sentence in
the state penitentiary.

Commissioner Gail Robinson
said the improved computer sys
tem would have several advan
tages. One is that it will improve
management of firefighting
records and make mandatory
reporting on fires more accurate
The proposed system also has
the potential to include a county
wide mapping system and a loca
tor for all public safety vehicles.
Robinson said.

Worthy first claimed during her
trial that the entire shooting was
an accident and then later testified
that a pattern of domestic violence
between Rumph and Worthy
caused her to shoot Dame Rumph
in self-defense.
Eyewitness testimony indicat
ed that there was no physical
struggle taking place at the time of
the shooting and that Worthy shot
Rumph at point-hlank range over
a verbal dispute.
There was also no evidence
presented at trial of a pattern of
domestic violence between
Rumph and Worthy.
Detective Scott McSwain, the
lead investigator in the case, ques
tioned Worthy after the shooting
and testified 'hat she never indi
cated at anytime during the inter
view that Rumph had been physi
cally abusive to her during their
approximately six-year courtship
Worthy told officers at the
scene in 1995 that she "shot the
gun once and it did not go off. so
she jacked another one in and shot
his a**." referring to Rumph.
These inconsistent theories and
her incriminating statement at the
crime scene indicated that the
shooting was purposeful and
sealed a conviction for the State.
Daphne Walker, the Assistant
District Attorney who presented
the case, said of the verdict and
