AIDS is spreading faster
among people under 24 than any
in any other age group, according
to the Georgia Department of
Human Resources.
That’s why World AIDS Day,
Dec. I, was planned to challenge
young people to reduce their risk
and control the spread of both
HIV and AIDS, through absti
nence or safe sex and through
avoidance of “shooting drugs.”
According to Bernadette
Burden, a DHR spokesperson, 70
cases of full-blown AIDS have
been reported in Houston County
since 1980. In this health district,
which includes Macon and Bibb
County as well as Houston and
several other counties, 628 cases
have been reported. Burden
notes, however, that there is no
cumulative reporting on the inci

Stone and Nancy Whiddon are
the co-advisors for the pageant
this year.
Each contestant will compete
in four areas. The contestants will

competition.
The pageant has an average
participation of 12 to 15 girls
from the high school, Stone said.
Contestants must have a B
average, they must be recom
mended to the position, and each
contestant has to raise money.
The pageant was changed to a
scholarship pageant 2 years ago.
Cash scholarships arc awarded
for each category, and Miss PHS
receives a SSOO scholarship to a
college or post-secondary school
of her choice.

at least 27,000 cases of HIV
statewide. Burden said. Many are
believed to have contracted the
virus in their teens.
According to statistics just
released by the DHR, AIDS
occurs far more often in men than
women, although the number of
women with AIDS is on the rise.
AIDS among African-Americans
is also increasing. AIDS is now
the leading cause of death for
African-American men and
women ages 20-44 in Georgia.
Sexual activity between men
and women is believed to have
been the cause of 2,353 reported

drug use accounting for another
3,755 cases. Homosexual activity
accounts for approximately
11,000 reported cases.
While progress is being made
on drugs which may keep victims
of AIDS alive longer, the disease
still has no real cure. It has led to
