United Way organizes its
campaign into units of in
dustry groups. Unit One,
Corporate Division, sur
passed the other units with
a campaign total of more
than $4 million. Gulfstream
Aerospace Corporation and
its employees gave the sin
gle largest contribution with
a total of S2.1 million.
Funds raised will be invest
ed in agencies that serve to
help children achieve their
potential, improve commu
nity health, and assist indi
viduals and families become
financially independent.
This year, United Way funds
more than 100 programs at
58 agencies in Bryan, Cha
tham, Effingham, and Liber
ty counties.
In addition to
funding community pro
grams and services, United
Way also connects citizens
to hundreds of human ser
vices through its call center,
2-1-1. During the aftermath
of Hurricane Matthew, Unit
ed Way 2-1-1 helped more
than 250 families by provid
ing food vouchers, transpor
tations, and other immediate
needs.

On Nov. 11, 2016,
the Georgia Hospital As
sociation (GHA) presented
its annual Hospital Hero
Awards at the association’s
Annual Meeting held in Sa
vannah. Recipients of the
award were recognized for
their outstanding contribu
tions to the health care field.
GHA Chairman Steve Gaut-
ney and GHA President and
CEO Earl Rogers presented
the prestigious awards to
eight Hospital Hero win
ners, two Physician Hero
winners, and one Lifetime
Heroic Achievement Win
ner, H. Kenneth Walker,
M.D. of Grady Memorial
Hospital in Atlanta.

cation to their hospitals and
communities. They are truly
deserving of these Hospital
Hero awards.”
Master Firefighter
Michael Curry was among
the firefighters and other first
responders who responded
to the dock ramp collapse on
River St. Saturday afternoon
just before 4:00 p.m.
Curry was assist
ing with the rescue of doz
ens of people who had fallen
into the river as a result of
the ramp collapse. Curry
suffered a medical condi
tion on scene and collapsed.
He was attended to by other
firefighters and emergency
medical personnel on scene
and was transported to Me
morial University Medical
Center. He died early Satur
day evening at the hospital.
Funeral arrange
ments are still being planned
at this time.
Curry was
42-years-old and lived in
Pooler. He was a 13-year
veteran of Savannah Fire
& Emergency Services. His
last assignment was with
Engine 16 (which is sta
tioned at fire headquarters),
which also handles marine
(boat) operations. He is the
24th Savannah firefighter to
die in the line of duty (dat
ing back to 1865). His funer
al will be a traditional “line
of duty death” ceremony
but the details are still being
worked out.

He earned both his bache
lor’s and master’s degrees
from Georgia State Univer
sity. He continued his ed
ucation through additional
graduate studies at the Uni
versity of Georgia. Huckaby
will retire after five years as
chancellor at the end of the
calendar year.
Due to ongoing road repairs,

campus.
