how to make hand-sewn
bears - no sewing machine

She began making these
bears about nine years ago,
when a soon-to-be best
friend of hers taught a class
on bear making at the Elks
Lodge in Bonita Springs,
Fla., where they both resid
ed. After much frustration
and many laughs, about a
dozen women made their
first bears and some of them,
like Carol, have been mak
ing bears ever since.
Carol and her husband
have been volunteering for
the past 10 years at state
parks and forest service
camping areas in various
states. Whenever camp hosts
were interested, they made
bears!
Over the years, she has
made at least 15 bears, for
her grandchildren as well as
for gifts. Her mother is in
a nursing home in Atlanta,
and her bear sits upon the
cabinet there, looking down
at her. Her grandchildren
have bears dressed in then
father’s clothes that she had
saved over years, as these
two bears were big enough
to wear a toddler’s clothing.
The first class she taught
at Houston Springs was a
huge success. Every bear was

Question Five. Let’s see who
is still standing when it’s all
over.
Question One: The city
of Tyre was recently in the
news. There is an allusion
to Tyre in a poem written
by a famous British poet in
the late 1800’s. Name the
poem.
Now, on with the weekly
quiz.

Early in the morning,
the social hour at Houston
Springs is out on the streets!
From about 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.,
you will see a parade of
people walking themselves,
walking their dogs, or the
less mobile may be riding
alongside the dog in a golf
cart! Over 70 percent of
the Houston Springs hom
eowners are pet owners, and
many people have formed
new friendships while their
dogs did the “meet and
greet” routine. Most of our
residents know the names
of everyone else’s dogs long
back door; and a best friend,
who’s laying siege to her
heart in her front yard.
And she has two families:
the Fretts, who stole her
and raised her right; and the
Crabtrees, who lost her and
won’t forget how they were
done wrong.
Now, in Between, Georgia,
population 90, a feud that
began the night Nonny was
born is escalating, and a ran
dom act of violence is about
to ignite a stash of family
secrets.
Ironically, it might
be just what the town
needs if only Nonny
weren’t stuck in between.

The social whirl out at
Houston Springs is the
product of a democratic pro
cess. We have a large social
committee that is current
ly planning several events,
including a Halloween
party, Thanksgiving dinner,
Christmas party and a New
Year’s Eve party. Those
who live far from their fami
lies will always find someone
to share the holidays with
at their village clubhouse -
they can celebrate with their
community family. Cliff West
heads the social committee
and they are trying to have
a major event approximately
once a month.
In between, there are
all kinds of club meetings
and impromptu parties in
the clubhouse and out by
the pool. There are also
frequent golfing games and
scrambles. This is an active
community that likes to stay
active!
Jackson, the bestselling
author of Gods in Alabama,
is a native of the deep south,
a former actor and award
winning teacher, and now a
full-time writer and mother
of two.
Her work has previously
appeared in TriQuarterly
and Calyx, as well as the
anthology ChickLitt 11. She
lives with her family outside
of Atlanta.
