said Scott. “The things in the community,
our the booster club with Tony Holder and
Kevin Long have really taken off. The gen
eral excitement of the program continues to
get better.
“We planted that seed a long time ago.
that we want to build a great football pro
gram and not just field a team. We stuck to
our guns. We have great administration ...
they've allowed us to do some things, really
lay a good foundation for this team.”

The team is indeed what all that work is
about. With all the numbers, Perry has been
able to join other traditional powers in Class
AAA as a team that can field one starter in
every position with few two-way guys.
Therefore, Casey Hayward has developed
into a major playmaking quarterback, Kanor
ris Davis became a pure terror on defense
and gigantic Johnnie Farms has focused his
attention on becoming a future offensive
tackle prospect.
“We’re looking at - good Lord willing - a
very explosive offense,” said Scott. “A de
fense that’s going to be young. We’re going
to start three sophomores on defense. It’s a
defense that’s going to attack you and run
to the football. I think we are going to be
sound in the kicking game with our punter
and kicker both returning.”
The main development over Perry’s off
season is that all the bones are gone from
the offense, whether it’s wishbones, broken
bones, ham bones or soup bones. With Hay
ward entering his senior season, Scott said
the Panthers are going with a spread look to
best suit the type of weapons Hayward has
around him.
“Not only has (Hayward) matured physi
cally, he’s matured mentally,” said Scott.
“HeV become more confident in his-game.
He’s also become an outstanding leader.
Mentally, he has matured into a definite D-l
football player.
“The biggest thing for him is to continue
to make plays. If he’s Casey, we’re going to
be successful. He’s continued to get better
each and every day.”

The change in the offensive game plan,
Scott said, comes from regular staff meet
ings and individual meetings with the play
ers to determine what direction they need
to take.
“You can’t stay the same,” he said. “You
either get better or you get worse.
“It’s a West Virginia spread. It’s some
thing a lot of people are going to. You have
to spread people out. We’re a lot more ath
letic than we were year No. 1.”
But a spread offense doesn’t mean a good
bye to the running game. Scott said the idea
is to run first and throw the ball to keep peo
ple honest. Hayward can get the football to
Brandon Golden, Akeen Felder, Trey Smith,
J.R. Lasseter, Jacory Lane and others in any
sort of manner for them to make the plays
that could result in six points at any time.
“We have a plethora of kids who can make
plays,” said Scott.

of nature.” He has the obvious size
and showed his strength during summer
conditioning, so all that remains is if he’s fig
ured out how to put it all together to be a
dominating tackle.
“Like most of our kids, he’s a tremen
dously hard worker,” said Scott. “He does
everything the line coaches ask him to do
and plays extremely hard.”
Farms, though, is just one guy at a spot
that needs five to six players all doing the
right job at the same time. The Perry line has
more experience up front from Clint Kirk
and Jay Golden to go with Allen Wiswell,
A.J. Foster and Austin White.
“It’s a good core of linemen that’s go
