Laptops are reliable, fast and comparable to desktop computers
In today’s society, espe
cially in the business
world, people want to
be mobile while at the same
time staying connected.
We have cell phones,
which can check email
and the Internet.
We have Pocket PCs,
which are miniature com
puters with Internet, email,
Microsoft Word, Excel, cal
endar, appointment and
task capabilities so you
don’t forget mom’s birthday
or to pick up the kids.
Finally, we also have lap
tops. This is the most com
mon computer people use
to communicate via email
when not at work or home,
or to bring data while on
the road.
The laptop provides por
tability. Most laptops have
an internal wireless net
work adapter so you can
hook up to the Internet at
any of the hot spots provid
ed at some businesses and
airports. Laptops perform
as good as a desktop and
cost less.
Finally they are durable
as they get bumped, carried,
dropped (but hopefully from
not too high up) and not so
gently laid down at times.
The obvious difference is
size. Everything in the lap-

Wow, imagine his embar
rassment.”
“It’s true,” it said. “I have
it on good authority that at
the very instant of his birth,
his mother was aboard a
Russian cruise ship that was
crossing the International
Date Line and the equator at
the same time, thus making
him a citizen of no coun
try and probably not even of
Earth.”
“Hmmm,” I said, “I
thought he was born in
Hawaii, and isn’t Hawaii one
of these United States?”
“Not one of the good ones,”
the apparition said. “Not one
that the forefathers fought
and died for before they
founded it.”
“Like Nevada?” I asked.
“You got that right!”
The visitor was gone in
a flash, to be replaced by a
kindred spirit.
“You know that John
McCain deserted his coun
try during the Vietnam War,
don’t you?” it said.
“Uh, you mean all those
years when he was held as a
prisoner of war?” I asked.
“Yeah, I heard he was right
there, with the enemy, 24

top has to be much smaller.
*To save space they do not
have expansion card slots,
as we know them in a desk
top.
So there are no network
cards, sound cards or video
cards. Most of the circuitry
is built right on the moth
erboard. This saves space
but on the other hand if
something goes wrong with
your sound or networking
capabilities you will have to
replace the entire mother
board, which is more expen
sive than replacing a card in
a desktop.
Just like desktop com
puters the processor is the
brain of the computer. And
just like everything else it
must be made smaller and
not quite as powerful.
Laptop processors are
generally soldered direct
ly to the motherboard or
attached using balls instead
hours a day, seven days a
week. Everybody needs to be
told that. Oh, and he’s really
old.”
“OK, thanks for the his
tory lesson,” I told the ghost
as it faded into the shadows.
With a major election so
near, I was to get no rest.
The grain in the woodwork
stirred, and I heard a third
voice opine:
“What’s with Joe Biden’s
teeth?” it asked. “They’re
really white. That doesn’t
seem normal for a guy who
claims he rides the train to
work. It kind of makes you
think, huh?”
I was at a loss for words,
except for seven.
“Maybe he goes to Joe the
Dentist,” I offered.
It vanished, almost bump
ing into a fourth phantasm.
“You know, Sarah Palin
claims to live in Alaska,” it
said, “but how long has that
been a state?”
“Actually, since slight
ly before Hawaii,” I said.
“Anyway, I think we already
covered this territory earlier
when we were discussing the
50th state.”
“Did we? Sorry, I was lis
tening to talk radio and the
mainstream media at the
same time, and I missed it.

of pins. In most cases, this
means that the processor
cannot be removed, there
fore no chance of upgrad
ing.
It is designed to run at
lower speeds than the desk
top to conserve energy and
produce less heat. One fea
ture the processor has is the
ability to communicate with
your operating system. If
nothing has been going on
a while the CPU will slow
itself down automatically
to conserve on energy and
heat. This process is called
“throttling”.
Laptops do not use reg
ular size memory chips
because they are too big.
Most normal size laptops
use a memory stick called
the Small Outline DIMM
(SoDIMM). They measure
about 2.6 inches long and
1.25 inches tall.
My most recent check indi
cated you can get Double
Data Rate and Double Data
Rate 2 memory chips which
is the most recent high-tech
in memory. The current
maximum memory for a
laptop is 2 gigabytes versus
4 gigabytes for a desktop.
That still is a lot of mem
ory, and unless you are a
gamer who needs special
ized graphic cards, 2 giga
bytes is more than enough
to check email, surf the
Internet and use Microsoft
Word or Excel.
For the portable sub
notebook, the memory type
is Micro-DIMM and is 50
percent smaller that the

Although you can use
a mouse the laptop has a
pointing device built into
the keyboard called a
Touchpad. Just draw with
your finger on the touchpad
and the pointing device will
follow your finger.
If you can’t get the hang
of using the Touchpad, dis
able it and buy a wireless
mouse instead.
You may include Bluetooth
technology for your lap
top. Although Bluetooth
does not have the range of
wireless network there are
still plenty of products out
there to make you wireless.
Common devices are key
boards, mice, printers, cam
eras, headsets and micro
phones.
Finally if you want to
expand what your laptop
can do there are PC Cards
that fit into a slot provided
on your laptop.
There are three types;
Type 1 is the smallest and is
most common for memory
cards to expand how much
memory you have in your
laptop.
Type II is thicker and is
mostly used for modems
networking capability and
sound cards.
Type 111 is the thickest
and its most common func
tion is to expand your hard
disk.
So if you are contemplat
ing buying a laptop com
puter you can be assured
it will be reliable, fast, and
have most, if not all, of the
same capabilities as your
didates such as Bob Barr,
Ralph Nader and Cynthia
McKinney. I painted over the
woodwork - two coats - as
fast as I could.
