Enjoying athletics, the Ants; play a fundraiser ton Pediatric AIDS
Thursday night at 7
p.m., the Perry High
Drama Department
led by Joe Sendek, will pres
ent “the yellow boat” in the
Perry High School Theater
for the Performing Arts.
The play, by David Saar,
is the true story of the life
and death of Benjamin Saar.
The Dessert Theater will
cost $lO and all proceeds
will benefit Pediatric AIDS
research.
Perry High School Junior,
Halston Kirkpatrick, played
a major roll in organizing
this fundraiser. Halston, a

Setting up the sound system for your PC
The computirig expe

complete with
out sound. Whether you
are flying the latest jet in
your favorite flight simu
lator game, listening to
the sounds of the beach
or watching your favorite
comedian it just won’t work
without sound. So setting
up and optimizing sound
for your PC is necessary to
make the most out of your
PC experience.
Correctly setting up sound
for your PC requires that
you know about quite a few
things because the sound
process has many compo
nents. You need a properly
installed sound card with
the correct drivers loaded.
Drivers are the software
that tells your PC what to
do with the sound card and
how it is configured. You’ll
need reasonably high-qual
ity speakers and a properly
installed game that can take
advantage of all the features
of your sound card.
So let’s start from the
beginning, you’ve all heard
the terms iTunes, MP3
and WAV files so I’ll start
with how sound works in
relation to those common
terms. Sounds travel from
a force of invisible but mea-

Computers aren’t near
ly as sophisticated as the
human ear and brain, so
clear standards have to be
set to convert music into a
format that a computer can
use to record and play.
Every PC comes with
four critical components
for capturing and record
ing sound; a sound card,
speakers, microphone and
recording playback soft
ware. Computers capture
the sound waves through a
process called sampling.
All of the characteristics
of sounds need to be record
ed and translated into ones
and zeros to reproduce that
sound accurately within the
computer and out to the
speakers.

sound formats was created

Contributed
in the 1960 s initially for car
rying telephone calls over
the first digital lines. With a
few minor changes to allow
for use in PCs that format is
still used today and is better
known as WAV files.
WAV files are great for
storing sounds and music,
but they do so at a price.
The WAV format uses up a
lot of disk space and your
computer, or any other play
back device, would fill up
quickly.
So a couple of clever com
puter programmers got
together and found a way
to compress the WAV files
without losing any of the
quality of sounds.
The most famous is called
the Fraunhoffer MPEG-1
Layer 3 codec, or as the
rest of us humans call it the
MP3. With the new MP3
standard you are able to
store thousands of songs,
instead of hundreds, thus
the revolution began.
Now you are able to store
thousands of MP3 songs
on a nifty device called an
IPOD. But WAV and MP3
are only two of file formats
for sound and not all sound
players can play all of these
formats.
So the device has to be
matched up with the sound

format.
There is also converting
software available to change
formats that will fit your
device if needed.
All of these formats can
be played on your computer
as well. Sound cards have
processors built into them
to play music and support
chips for joysticks and other
devices.
These cards work with
the CPU to play video and
sound for games. But the
sound card is only part of
the equation you also need
good speakers.
Every sound card sup
ports two speakers and
headphones, but many
higher-end sound cards can
support up to five or more
speakers. These multiple
speakers provide surround
sound, popular not only for
games but also for people
who enjoy playing DVDs on
their PC.
Going beyond the stan
dard two-speaker sys
tem has been a challenge
in the sound world since
the 1970’5. But it wasn’t
until standards produced by
Dolby Laboratory’s Dolby
Digital in the 1990’s that
