THE DAILY SUN.
OFFICIAL JOURNAL OF THE CITY.
Monday Morning, April a, 1860.
Smyth & Vebdek.—Our merchant readers and
others are referred to the card of Smyth* Ved
der, New York® We bespeak from those who
may visit that city in search of brandies, wines,
Ac., to give them a call.
Come at Last.—Rvnehart's Cracker Machine,
so long needed, has at length arrived. Send in
your orders for crackers, he is now prepared to
fill them.
Mahose, the Barbee.—ls you would enjoy the
luxury of the tonsorinl operation, skillfully per
formed, or that of a cold or warm bath, read
the advertisement of Richard Mahono, that you
may know where to find him. He is well pre
pared and always willing to make a customer
feel like anew man.
,1. H. Daniel & Cos. arc selling negro hats very
cheap. Planters and others will make a note of
the fact. They hnvo another advertisement also
to which we refer.
J. H. Merry.—Merry’s clothing store, a well
known establishment in this city, is supplied
with anew stock of spring and summer cloth
ing. The proprietor's taste and judgment are
unquestionable, and we would direct attention
to his announcement elsewhere.
M illiams s Picture Gallery. —Those of either
sex who would have their ‘‘counterfeit present
ments’ taken, can have it done in good stylo on
various materials, at prices as cheap or high as
desired. Give Williams a call and examino his
specimens.
B. A. Ware & Son have received anew
supply of Surgeon’s Scissors ; also India
Rubber Balls.
The Board of Central Fire Department
are referred to the notice of their secreta
ry for an important meeting to-night.
Negroes for Sale.
Ellis & Livingston advertise valuable
negroes for sale to-morrow at the Mar
ket House. Persons needing field hands
or house servants, should call and see
them during the day at their Auction
Room.
Direct Importation.
The advertisement of J. I. Griffin, Ap
alachicola, appears elsewhere. Ilis stock
of goods is represented by a gentleman,
who has had ocular evidence, to bo one
of the rarest and best assorted in the
country. They havo been collected by
Mr. Griffin, in person, in Europe and are
imported directly to this country. We
have many readers who visit Apalachico
la and trade there. They should, by all
means, give him a call.
Young America No. s—Public Drill.
Saturday afternoon was the occasion of the
first formal introduction of the new Engine of
Fire Company No. 5, to the public, when it was
done by public drill and parade. There were
forty-six members in ranks, and they presented
an uncommonly fine appearance.
On Broad street, they threw two streams
about one hundred feet high, with one hundred
feet of hose and a three-quarter nozzle. An
other and a single stream was thrown to the
height of about 160 or 180 feet, over Cook’s
Hotel, with a nozzle of the same dimensions.
At the latter place the company partook of an
elegant repast that had been spread for their
refection. Remarks were made by Capt. Col
quitt, Mr. Frank Bloom, Foreman of Protection
Fire Cos. No. 1, of Macon, and also by Chief En
gineer Morton, of the Fire Department of this
city. We regret that previous and indispensa
ble engagements prevented ourcomplyingwith
a polite invitation to attend.
Os the usefulness of this Company and the
capacity of their new Engine, the public are
fully satisfied; the former has been tested on
more occasions than one, and the latter will
certainly do to rely upon.
Another Necessity.
In our last issue we called attention to
the absence of accommodations for carry
ing passengers from one portion of the
city to another. Wo now desire to direct
attention to another matter which de
mands the attention of our “City haul
ers,” but which their multifarious duties
have caused hitherto to be neglected.
We have allusion to the want of necessa
ry sign boards to indicate the different
streets of the city. We have a City Di
rectory, but owing to the deficiency in
question, it is almost useless, and will
continue so until it is supplied.
There are persons who have resided
here for twenty years who are yet unac
quainted with the localities of the differ
ent streets, owing to the cause abovo men
tioned, and the necessity of putting up
proper indices to point them out, is so
palpable, that it would be superfluous to
say more than call attention to it.
In common with many others, we hope
this matter will receive the earliest prac
ticable attention of the City Council.
.
Jacobs, tike Magician.
It has been already announced, Pro
fessor Jacobs will commence a series of
his unique entertainments to-night at
Temperance Hall. The following notice
of his performances in Montgomery is
from the Advertiser of Saturday:
This renowned magician, ventriloquist
and improvisatore, has made Commercial
Ilall the centre of attraction during the
present week. By turns he has delighted
and astonished his audiences, and offered
entertainments of the most enjoyable
character. Theeleginoe aud gorgeous
ness which at once attract the eyo on en
tering the hall, is suggestive of a palace
of enchantment, and seems to be some
what of a realization of oriental splen
dor. The display is almost dazzling, his
apparatus being of massive silver, and of
the most ingenious construction. Being
well prepared, we have never seen his
feats of legerdemain equalled ; and, as
an improvisatore, he is probably unri
valled.

The Fire In LaGrange.
From the Atlanta Intelligencer we learn
that the tiro which occurred Wednesday
j night last, in LaGrange, was first discov
ered in the College Chapel, aud in less
than half an hour the building was iu
ruins. The boarding house in the rear of
the College edifice was saved, owing to
the almost superhuman efforts of some of
our citizens. There was no insurance on
the building. Prof. Henry S. Heard lost
bis entire chemical and philosophical ap
paratus. l’rof. Dickson lost everything.
Prof. Briggs lost Ids entire musical li
brary and all his valuable instruments.
None ot the young ladies of the institu
tion were in the least injured, and sustain
no loss whatever. The exercises of tho
College are nlreudy resumed. The build
ing will he re-built at once. Nothing is
known of the origin of the fire.
Tho cost of the Colloge building, we
learn from another source, was $85,000.

National Democratic Convention.
A dispatch from Washington, the 27th,
states that the most unremitted efiorts
still continue thorc to induce the execu
tive committee to change the place for
holding the Democratic Presidential con
vention. The imperfect accommodations
at Charleston, exorbitant prices, inac
cessibility of the place and lateness of the
season are all urged as arguments. And
it is now stated that the committee are to
meet in that city the sth of April to take
the subject again into consideration, and
to come to afinal determination upon it.
Going Hlgltt to Work.
Tho Macon Telegraph of the 31st learns
that application was made the day pre
vious, by the Provisional Board of Di
rectors of the Macon & Augusta Rail
Road, to secure the services of Mr. Geo.
11. Hazelhurst, of this place, to begin at
once the preliminary surveys of routes
contemplated by the action of the Augus
ta Convention of the 28th. This shows
a commendable earnestness and prompti
tude on the part of the Board.
Fire at Niagara, C. W.
Niagara, March 20.—A fire yesterday

the Odd Fellows’ and Masonic Lodges and
