Hall Hond Meeting in pike.
A meeting held at Troy, l’iko county, I
Ala., the 22J inst., to solicit subscrip
tions to tbc Troy Railroad Incorporation,
the following Preamble and Resolutions,
published in the Troy papers, wore un
animously adopted:
Whereas, the people of Pike County
have lor years past labored under serious
inconvenience with regard to the trans
portation of their crops, traveling, and
being isolated and cut off from all River
riavigotion, Rail Road facilities &e. And
whereas, the said citizens of Pike County
aro an industrious enterprising people,
disposed at all times to do their whole
duty towards effecting business inter
course and connection with our Capital
City, and having received from that
quarter neither material aid or encour
agement, we feel constrained to turn our
efforts in a different direction and accept
the invitation of our Columbus friends.
Therefore be it
Rtiolved, That it now being manifest
that we may no longer look to our own
fellow citizens of Montgomery for assist
ance in enabling us to transport the
production of the county of Pike, and af
ford us facilities to develop the resources
of our rich and popular County.
Resolved, That Pike County has been
heretofore greatly overlooked by Mont
gomery— that Commercial City built up
and enriched by our Citizens, by a mi--
taken policy in building roads and in
other directions—confidently believing
that our citizens are forced to trade in
that market.
Ilf solved. That the thanks of this meet
ing is due lo the citizens of Columbus
for the magnanimous movement and ma
terial aid they have afforded in contribu
ting their thousands lo build us a Rail
Road, and we will in the future renum
ber their liberality.
Resolved, That the meeting deem it al
together expedient and important to con
nect Troy and Columbus by Rail Road at
once, inasmuch ns that a large portion of
the citizens of the County are directly, ‘
and each and every citizen indirectly, in
terested in iho project.
Resolved, That we will take and sub
scribe the capital ’ stock of $'70,000 or
whatever amount necessaiy to put said
work in a stale of speedy completion—
and fur this purpose, each citizen be and
is hereby requested to lake stock accord
ing to Ins ability. And that the agents
of said company heretofore appointed be
requested to open the books for that pur
pose—and all of the above Resolutions
being unanimously adopted.
Resolved, That the same be published
in our county papers.

of Georgia, from tiro select committee of
the Senate, to which was referred the

1. It repeals the second section of the
act of June, 1858, which provides for the
settlement of certain land claims in Mis

clude the Iloumns land claim of Louis

-. It gives to the District Courts of
Louisiana jurisdiction in these cases, and
authorize claimants to employ couusel at
their own expense.
o. It compels claimants lo commence
judicial proceedings against the United
States within two years after the passage
of this bill, in default of which or in case
of failure to establish their claims tiro

At the recent Itailrna l Convention in
Augusta, Mr. a delegate IVom Ma
con, explained why that city had not
subscribed mure than $.<0,000 to tho pro
posed Hoad to Augusta. She was limi
ted hy her charier, in subscriptions to
works of internal improvement, to two
hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Two
hundred thousand dollars had been sub
scribed to the Mnoon and lirunswiek rail
road, and she had lint fifty Iliousanddol
lars left for this euiorpriso. Hut appli
cation would be made to tho Legislature,
for permission to increase the subscrip
tions, and she would thou subscribe two
hundred thousand dollars. Thus far, on
ly her business men had subscribed ; but
as soon as there was a strong possibility
that the road would lie built, her capital
ists would take hold of it. and the sub
scriptions would ho largely increased.
Using to Charleston.
The Augusta Dispatch, in view of the
report that it will be impossible for
Charleston to accommodate the crowds
which will gather there at the approach
ing Convention, makes the following sug
gestion, which we think very feasible.—
Let the South Carolina Kailroad company
run an accommodation train between Au
gusta and Charleston, leaving the former
city sufficiently early iu the morning
to attend the Convention and leaving
Charleston in the afternoon time enough
to “roost” iu Augusta at night.
The arrangement would be profitable
to the ltoad, ami an accommodation to
Georgians and others who would visit
tho Convention for one day only and see
the magnates of the land.

Lear Repress :—The Examining Court
called in the case of John Bell Brownlow,
charged with the homicide of J. W. Reese,
at Euiory and Henry College, on the 22d
of February, commenced their investiga
tions here last Thursday, the 22d inst.,
and closed them late this evening. The
result was, that the accused was sent on
I for further trial at the approaching term
of the Circuit Court, under bonds for his
appearance, in the sum of one thousand
dollars. Seven magistrates sat upon the
case, of whom three were for tho imme
diate discharge of Brownlow.
The insignificance of the bend for a
case of killing, indicates tho opinion of
the whole Court, and what the result of
the final trial is likely to be. In fact, it
was shown by the testimony of the pros
ecution, that the unfortunate ltoese, be
gan by word and act, the affray that euded
so fatally ; and that the killing, so far
from being intended, was wholly a mis
-1 adventure.
Tho prosecution was successfully con
ducted by J. W. Earnest, Attorney for
the Commonwealth, with his usual übili
ty, and the defense by 11. It. Johnston,
James Shelley, Walter Preston, John A.
Campbell, and other able lawyers, who
evidently won the croud. EMORY.
