" Well, mother—but U there any reason?
Obi yon do not know I have dreamed and
dreamsd of a beautiful tree that I should hava
this Ohriatmu; it wm full of golden fruit and
lighted tapers, and under it were laid gilts for
you, dear mother—a new Bible, with large
print, and a parse or money, so that you might
uot have to work eo bard, dear mother, and

cold. And oh 1 aa I came along the street
to-day, and uw the windows shining with

telling how they would not cars for anything
else, when the Gorlstmafrday wu once come
aad they would have their loaded tree—then,
mother, all the drums 1 have had since i can

"Dear Franta." said the mother, "it wua

your heart again. Oh 1 the Christ-child is al
ways good—always loving, even when his love
is shown in such ways that we do not see it at
once. Come closer to me. Front*."
Pronto uw >n his mother's race a look of

He tool

'The Christ child hu given yoo beautiful

warm, earnest heart; he has given yon a moth
of the night; and he gives ns, more than all, a
hop# of heaven, and a knowledge of the path
to it. Are not these great gifts, Franta ? f
Franta lilted his face; he did not speak, bnt
bis eyu were toll of tears, and bis mother

Bo she went on:
These are the gifts we most need to make
us happy: others moy be good for as, but the
Christ-child knows better thau we do what we
need. If it were good for us, he would give
as all we wish for: but then we might not
make a good use of his gifts, or we might grow
proad ot them, or be so wrapped ap in gilts an
to forget the Giver. An 1 my Frouto, let us
only ask for what Is but for ns to have, and
be will give.it; he lovu to give, and only refuses
what will hurt ns,
"How can we know what ia but—what to

If it ia not given, think that la but withheld

And the mother arose aad took front a clout

‘This,’ she continued, ‘Is all I ban, and If

-Could I not do without shout’ asked
Franta. ‘1 would go u many errand, for tho

‘And I—should I do without shoul' asked

. Long did Frants Ho awake that night, and

a thought sprang into bis mind. It wu not
wrong to ask the Christ-child for what we wish,
if ws will onlv patiently bear the withholding.
He wonld ask for tho tree. But how7 Bis
