NO MORE KILLING FROSTS.
PUMA KIllED IN BULLOCH.
So the Fruit Growers Are Now Hope- Wild Animal Pursued in a Swamp and
ful That Crop Will Be 8afe.
Augusta, Ga., March 22.—With the
passage of today Augusta and vicln-
it are safe from the dangers of a kill
ing frost, and the probability Is that
there will be nothing resembling a
frost until next fall.
March 21st is the latest day in the
history of the local signal station for
a killing frost. Light frosts, such as
rarely do any damage except to frag
ile plants, have occasionally occurred
later, even up to April. *But even
these are the exception after the 21st.
This announcement will be good
news for the fruit growers of the vi
cinity. The warm weather of the past
three weeks has caused all of the
trees to bud and blossom. With many
the blooms are rapidly disappeai
and the appearance of the fruit t{nd
■its first stage of development is oply
a question of a few days. Anything
approaching a killing frost would now
cause havoc among the majority of
the trees. It would put an end to the
present possibility of a fine fruit spa-
son.
It is also true that every indication
points to a pleasant and early spring.
As a rule, an early spring and a sea
sonable planting season always follpwe
a severe winter. Last winter was one
of the severest on record, and If
ule holds good, the spring should^ be
me of the most favorable of recent
years. Thus far the weather has tyen
all that could be desired. There la
every possibility that the present rain
deficiency will be made up.
Although a little late in starting pp-
eration, the farmers are making ex
cellent progress in preparing the soil
and planting crops.

Estimates Indicate That Tkey Paid
Dear for Their Victory.
Gunshoe Pass, 108 miles north of
Tie Pass, Manchuria, March 21.—The
Japanese losses are estimated at the
Russian headquarters to be 100,000.
Some of the troops employed to
cover the retreat from Mukden were
badly demoralized, losing their way
in the hills eastward, and only now
rejoining their own divisions.
So certain was Gen. Kuropatkin of
being able to bold Mukden that maps
of the country northward were not
even distributed. Kuropatkin, how
ever, resolved to accept battle against
his better Judgment, owing to the im
patience of St. Petersburg for victory,
or he was confirmed in this decision
by false calculations of Field Mar
shal Oyama’s strength.
One of the main factors of the suc
cess of the Japanese was the viola
tion of Chinese neutrality in the use
of the Sinmintin road.

mander Badly Shattered.
St. Petersburg, March 22—The story
that Gen. Kuropatkin remains at the
front In command ot'Gen. Linevitch’a

ceeding to Irkutsk, where he may
stop a shbrt time to recuperate before
returning to St. Retersburg. Hls
nerves are said to be badly shattered.
It is again being' positively affirmed
that Kuropatkin requested the emper

Shot to Death.
Statesboro, Ga., March 22.—David
Beasley, a reliable and well-to-do farm
er, living ten miles southwest of
Statqsboro, on Lott's creek, brought
to town today the dead carcass of
what was thought by those best in
formed to be a lion weighing 150
pounds. The animal was killed after
a thrilling chase last Saturday by Mr.
Beasley and a minister, Ben Wilker*
son, a near by neighbor. Arising early,
Mr. Beasley went to a swamp, where
he hid himself behind his turkey pen,
and after yelping for a few minutes,
hoping to be able to take home with
Jlim a wild turkey, his attention was
attracted to what he thought at first
was a deer, but immediately discover-

onions. I have always made a profit,

of course, will do best on good, rich
