j has ever known destroyed yesterday
| the Syndicate block on Nicolette av-
• enue, between Fifth and Sixth streets,
| at a loss estimated at $1,000,000, and
it is possible that two lives were lost,
. although this has not as yet been def
initely determined.
Twelve persons were rescued from
the upper stories of the building.
The origin of the fire Is unknown.
The alarm was given by passers-by
who saw flames bursting out of the
second-story window. Before the Are
men arrived the tenants of the build
ing, who were asleep In the upper
rooms began to appear at the windows j
calling frantically for aid. j
A strong southwest wind was blow I
ing, and in a very few minutes the I
west half of the building was a orar- j
ing rurnace. The entire ore depart- |

hut it was Inadequate, and a call was
sent to St. Paul for help, and this
was Immediately furnished.

ALLEGED BRIBERS ON TRIAL.

Springfield, Ill., March 6.—The case
of State Senator Pemberton and for
mer Representative Clark, charged
with conspiracy to bribe in connection
with the contracts for furnishing the
State capitol, was called for trial to
day in the Sangnmon county court.
This will be the third trial of the
case.
The first trial resulted in a Jury
disagreement and the second trial
was permanently ended by the death
of a son of one of the Jurymen.
