DOES FARTHER WESTWARD.
Washington, 8ept. 1.—The center
of population of the United States was
announced by Director of the Census
Durand today to bo la the western
part of Bloomington, Monroo county.
Indiana. This Is eight miles further
west than the'location announced Ju
ly 17, when Director Durand placed It
4 1*2 miles south of Unlohvltle, in
the same county.
The exact longitude of tie center
of population Is 88 degrees 32 minut
es and 29 seconds, a difference of 9
seconds, or 8 miles front the previous
announcement. Bloomington Is In
Southern Indiana.
Ten years ago the center of popula
tion wa, 6 miles southeast of Colum
bus, Ind.„ 39 miles east of It* new
location.
The change In the location of the
center of population since July 17 Is
due to the discovery of an error made

Kissimmee, Fla., Sept. 1.—Egbert
Glllett and Elizabeth Sears,, members
of tire Shaker colony at Ashton near
this Jolty, were pladed In Jail here
last night charged with causing tho
death of Sadie M&rchant, another
member of the colony.
Sadie Marcha.it died Aug. 22 and
was burled on the colony land by Gil-
litt and a woman known as Sister
Amanda. The officers wore notiflod
of the occurrence and after nn Inves
tigation arrested Olllett and tho Sears
woman. They admit giving tho pois
on, asserting that the victim was
hopelessly ill with tuberculosis and
wanted to die’ and escape from her
sufferings. They acceded to her ap
peals and gave her chloroform.
The dead woman was 34 years of
age, Glllett 53 and the woman who is
implicated with him was 74 yester-,
