Below wo give a few extracts
from Bradstroot’s report of tho cot
ton crop, which show a general fall
ing off of tho present crop through
out, the entire cotton raising coun
try, and the highest estimate
for this year’.; crop is placed at
r»,r,00,IKM) bales. The report says:
“The counties reported comprise
OS per cent, of the cotton-growing
regions. The reports show conclu
sively that the present crop has
suffered from a drouth scarcely less
hurtful than that of 1881, when an
expected big crop was cut down to
5,150,000 bales, it is too soon to ex
pect reports indicating approxi
mately the actual outturn of the crop
in bales, as the weather for the next
six weeks as affecting the picking
will have much inlluence as re
gards the ultimate yield. Gen
erally the plant has been so injured
by the drouth that a top-crop is out
of the question, but, with favorable
weather, a top crop may be gather
ed in localities. It should be borne
in mind in connection with this, as
with other reports, that the returns
are given as received from corres
pondents, without adding to or ta
king away.”
Upon the general condition of
tho crop, the report says:
“From the replies of correspond
ents, 7i per cent, make the weather
bad for September, while 52 per
cent, reported bud weather in the
August report. Turning to ‘pros-
poets for average crop,’ 82 per cent,
of the correspondents report bad,
while in the August report only 4(1
per cent made the outlook bad. A
month ago, the possibility of favor
able weather, and a consequent
revival of the plant, had to be taken
into account in judging of the pros
pect for an average yield, A
month afterward, however, no
weather favorable could repair the
damage inflicted. Hence the rela
tive greater falling off in prospects.
Picking in all the cotton States,
with, perhaps, the exception of
Tennessee and Virginia, (where it
is only just beginning) is much fur
ther advanced than in average |

tical is the proclivity as to form an
angle of not more than forty de

nndoring, and with the dense-
growthed little trees the way is
made quite accommodating. When
down the first thing of interest is a
stream of water, a rippling brook,
clear as crystal, as it conics winding
down the cavern and pointing its
source to some sub-earthly region
beyond. The water is very cold and
extremely alkaline to fbe taste,
which argues the probability of the
presence of a medicinal virtue. A
rumbling noise of a peculiar char
acter is beard far up the cave, un
like distant thunder or ear-wheels.
The waves of sound seem to strike
tho walls and reverberate, reaching
the tympanum of the ear with ir
regular density, which gives rise to
a nervoussensation which the writer
never experienced before,
The walls are composed of a com

The report for Burke county gives
tho prospects of an average crop as
“bad.” From the reports rendered
to us by our farmers, we believe
the falling off in Burke county will
be at least one-third for the present
year—some put it down as much
greater. The report says that the
drouth this year in Georgia is re
ported to be the worst in the histo
ry of the State.
The whole report makes it clear
that the falling off throughout the
entire cotton belt will be very great,
and as a sequence a rise in the
price of the staple must occur. We,
therefore, can give no better advice
to om‘ farmers, than to say to those
who can do so to bold their cotton
for this inevitable rise. Of course,
those who are under obligations to
their merchants must meet their
promises, and make the best they
can of their short crop.
A Natural Wonder In Iturke County.
Communicated.
My object in this communication
is to present to the minds of your
renders some facts relative to a nat
ural curiosity in this county. While
Burke is not behind other counties
in progress, yet I doubt not but that
there are many to whom this ac
count will appear new and interest
ing.
On the border of Savannah river,
near Hancock’s Landing, perhaps
two and one-lmlf miles from the
river, is a beautiful section of coun
try, with tall pines, shady oaks, and
all kinds of vegetation indigenous
to our temperate clime. To tho
passerby nothing of unusual inter
est presents itself. But it is here,
enclosed and decorated with the
beauty of a vernal forest, that the
visitor finds the subject of my dis
course, viz: “The Cave,” peculiar,
picturesque, and grand in all of its
outlines.
It is not an excavation in the
earth, as the word indicates, but a
natural tunnel, large enough—as far
as it is expedient to go—to afford
passage fora train of ears, only that
one end lias no outlet that is known,
as it yet remains to be fully ex
plored.
It is said that, some years ago, a
resident of the locality determined
to And the terminus. After secur
ing lamp and matches, lie went as
far as he could without light, then
lighting bis lamp bo continued,
when suddenly bis light was extin
guished, and ho was compelled to
retreat. This incident mystified the
natives—especially were the appre
hensions of tlu> superstitious arous
ed—and aided by the natural sug
gestion that such a dismal cavern
afforded, all efforts toward further
exploration were relaxed. It is
thought that an Jrrospirahlo gas
exists in the interior of the cave
that will prevent further knowledge
of it—perhaps carbonic oxide gas,
or the “choke-damp” of mines,
which is generally found in such
places.
and viewing the stupendous rocks
and nature’s varied superstructures
here, while the little ferns and bow
ers around play their part in the
scene, an emotion strange, grand
and wonderful strikes the mind. It
is sublime !
That sensation which a traveler
realizes while on a mountain top,
and viewing the landscape beneath,
thus soliloquizes: How little is man
in contradistinction to the omni
wonderful works of nature? and
with the trio—man, nature, and na
ture’s God—lie finds himself alone,
dumfounded, lost in admiration and
contemplation. These and similar
thoughts are the presentiments of
“The Cave,” the greatest phenome
non of Its kind In Georgia.
