New England is rejoicing over

THE HUSTLER OF ROME, TUESDAY OCTOBER, 9 1894.
THE ONLY EDITOR
So far, Editor Craig of the
Gainesville Eagle has been the on
ly Georgia editor to decline against
the appointment of Miss Ellen J.
Dortch, to be Gov. Atkinson's pri
vate secretary. Among other things
Editor Craig said:
‘•The sanctums of the newspa
pers and the desks of politicians
are being d< luged with little per
fumed circular letters announcing
her platform.”
Miss Dortch made this comment
upon that remark:
“\Ve have always heard that Mr.
Craig was the ugliest man in Geor
gia. We are now satisfied <n this
point. Only a very ugly nn n c mid

Says the Philadelphia Record :
President Cleveland and the friends
of President Cleveland will with
out doubt give a sturdy support to
the regular Democratic state tick,
et in New York. It is an insult to
insinuate that they will be found
encouraging or aiding the bolters.
But no time should be lost in
making such an unmistakable
avowal in favor of Senator Hilf as
would put an end to all questions
of quibble. This avowal should
come from the President himself.
John Maddox will be re-elecfed,
November 6, by a good round ma
jority, for his record has been vir
tually without a Haw, and he has
done what he believed his consti
tuents wanted him to do, and what
his conscience directed him to do.
Add to this honesty, his superior
ability and hearty zeai. and what
more could the people ask in a
congressman? Nothing. And that’s
why he will be elected by such a
large majority next month. —Dal-
ton Argus.

Mr, P. J . Maddox, a clever rep
resentative of the Barnum and
Bailey show was m the office yes
terday and gave some interesting
facts concerning lhe biggest show
on earth. Mr. Maddox has been
in the show business a number ol
years, but only went w ith the B.
ifc B. this season. He was for six
years un advertising man in Fore
paugh’s—which by the way i
owned by Mr. James A. Bailey,
Speaking of Mr. Baiiey’s recent
purchase of the entire interest of
Mr. Barnum ‘is in gthe big show,
Mr. Maddox said: “1 only know
from heresay what Mr. Bailey
paid for ihe show—ssoo,ooo.
But I do know that when he pur
chased a half interest from Mr.
Barnum that he paid only $150,000
for it. But the show was loosing
money then, aud of course, he got
it at a rediculouely low figure, Mr.
Bailey infused new life aud energy
into it, aud it has been making
big money since, and the property
is worth considerably over sl,oou,
000,
“The last time they were south
the) lost $20,000. The season now
in nothing to brag on, but we will
come out ahead. SB,OOO to SIO,OOO
is considered a good days business
$5,000 or $6,000 med ium, aud be
low tl ose figures the mai agement
loose money.”
“People that know anything
about modern circuses, know that
no other will begin to compare
‘with the Barnum and Bailey’s.
We give you identically the same
performances that we do tn all the
large northern cities, and it cost
only 50/.”
Mr. Maddox showed me bills
for teed for the stock and anima s
and provision for the people, which
he had engaged in Atlanta ana
I find it foots up to $2,200. This
aoes not include license, state aud
county, newspaper adds, railroar
transportation, salaries for 7(0
people aud numerous other expens
es. So you see a big show has to
take in lots of half dollars before
they make anything clear.
Earnum & Baileys will spread
their canvass on the old show
grounds on Second Avenue between
the Rome Railroad aud the river.
This is a wise move «s it is such a
long way'out to North Rome that
the night performance, anyway,
would be a flat failure. Besides it
benitits the merchants to have the
show so near the business center,
i he prospects are that a very large
crowd will be here next Tuesday
morning.
A lady walked into Trevitt &
Johnson's the other afternoon
and it was noticalle that her
hands and face were slightly chap
ped.
“Will you please tell me some
thing good for chaps?” she enquir
ed of Gus Johnson.
‘Spank ’em marm, replied Mr.
Johnson, smiling.
She looked al him hautily a me
ment, aud then Gus thought of
what a queer mistake he had made
and begged her pardon.
