Lawton Pearson
earns top annual
science award
Lawton Pearson of Perry was
named winner of the annual Bausch
& Lomb Science Award on May 12
at Westfield Schools. The Science
Award, a handsome bronze medal,
is presented each year to winners at
approximately 6,500 participating
schools throughout the United
States, Canada and several foreign
nations. More than 385,000
medals have been awarded to out
standing science students since the
program began in 1933.
The Bausch & Lomb Science
Award is especially significant be
cause it recognizes the junior stu
dent at a school who has attained
the highest scholastic standing in
science subjects.
As winner of the Award, Lawton
is eligible to apply to become a
University of Rochester Bausch &
Lomb Scholar. This designation
carries with it scholarship funds,
the minimum amount being $5,000
per year for four years.

make a dedicated effort," said Col.
Miles, "to go after the erratic
drivers...DUl's, speeders, tailgaters,
lane-changers, and inattentive
drivers...the 20 percent who place
the other 80 percent of safe drivers'
lives in danger."
Col. Miles also called upon the
thousands of cellular phone users in
the state to join in the safety
campaign by reporting drunk or
dangerous drivers and by setting
good examples for other drivers. "If
we can encourage seat belt use and
designated drivers to counteract
alcohol, we can save at least half
the expected deaths," he said.

tournaments and is ranked among
the top 20 players in Europe in
her age group. (The final "a" is
added to her surname because she

he laughed and said that he
thought Bulgaria only had one
golf course - possibly near the
Black Sea.
