Middle Georgia College begins
study in health field this fall
COCHRAN- Middle Georgia
College will begin two programs of
study in the allied health field
occupational therapy assistant and
health information technician
(medical record technician)- starting
in the fall of this year.
The initial start-up of both
programs is with the help of the
Title 111 Grant the college received.
During the second year of the five
year grant, MGC was slated to
begin programs in the allied health
field.
In the spring of this year, MGC
hired program coordinators for the
new career-track programs. Heather
Copan will head the occupational
therapy assistant (OTA) program,
and Mary Nilssen will direct the
health information management
(HIM) program. Ms. Copan and
Ms. Nilssen have spent the past
several months planning and
organizing the event.
Students interested in pursuing
either program should first apply
for admission to MGC. Each
program has its own admissions
process that prospective students
will then follow to be considered
for admission into the program.
Both the OTA and the HIM
programs have approximately 55-60
credit hours of core courses a
student will take. Just because a
student completes core courses in
one of the programs docs not
guarantee admission into the
program.
Occupational therapy is a health
profession which uses activities to
help individuals achieve physical
and emotional independence and
volunteer work at the nursing
homes and planning for the
Happy Hour, the Pilot Club

husband, moved to Perry in
1940. There were two children
born to this union, five
grandchildren and three great
grandchildren.
She opened a beauty shop in
her home in 1955 and continues

basis. She is a member of First
Baptist Church.
Sue Flemling, club president,
said, “Polly is a hard worker and
does everything to perfection.
We are fortunate to have her as a
member of Pilot, and, most of
all, to have her as a friend She
deserves to be named Pilot of the
Year.”
The Pilot Club of Perry will
be represented at the Pilot
International Convention in San
Antonio, Texas July 22-27, by

well-being. The funstion of an
occupational therapy assistant is to
provide services, under the
supervision of an occupational
therapist, to people whose abilities
to perform daily life tasks have
been impaired.
An occupational therapy
assistant may work in a variety of
settings. Persons with good
interpersonal skills and the ability
to work with people of varied
cultural and socio-economic
backgrounds are good candidates to
work in the field of occupational
therapy.
The HIM professional manages
the collection, analysis, and use of
